How to approach self-development

Dounia stresses the importance of constantly looking to improve yourself, and gives us tips on how to do so.

Self-development does not depend on academic degrees or reaching the highest rank in your job. Self-development is a person's effort to simply be better, by possessing new skills and capabilities. These abilities are developed through experiences that a person obtains in his/her daily life. The main reason why self-development is important and why striving for something more can be beneficial is you will gain more respect for yourself. In an age where mental health is an utmost priority, having ample self-respect and self-esteem is good for you.

On that same note, working towards a goal can kill off any negativity, and self-development can actually increase positivity and optimism among all. Ultimately, self-development can lead to more positivity, creativity, and happiness. So, how exactly can you start the uplifting journey of self-development?

"Most of all, persevere and concentrate. The biggest thing that prevents a person from developing him/herself for the better is the scourge of procrastination."
  • Arrange your goals in order of importance. There is always going to be one goal that is the most important. Therefore, you can spend more time on the most important tasks, and work your way down. This way, you can learn more in an efficient and helpful way.

  • Maintain your self-confidence. Real success begins with self-respect, appreciation, and confidence in one’s abilities, rather than acceptance by others.

  • Engage in meditation and yoga. Activities such as meditation and yoga can generate a peace-of-mind. When you have a better understanding of yourself, there is clarity about your hopes and dreams. The practice of mindfulness enables you to improve tolerance, focus, and flexibility.

  • Always look to learn more. Nourish yourself by joining educational seminars and courses, and read nonfiction books about self-help or routes to success to gain more wisdom.

  • Rather than being the center-of-attention, speak less at gatherings and listen to other people’s conversations to learn about their experiences and stories, and possibly apply those lessons to your life.

  • Most of all, persevere and concentrate. The biggest thing that prevents a person from developing him/herself for the better is the scourge of procrastination.

In short, make an effort to get up everyday and think about how you can be better, and you will find yourself on a rewarding path of self-development.
